Christopher Lowe, 37, from Durdar has been running long distance events in memory of his grandparents who passed away from cancer, raising funds for Cancer Research UK. It will be the sixth running challenge the residential support worker has taken part in this year, after completing the Solway, Scafell Pike, Blackpool, Howgill marathons and a further one round Blackwell. Christopher said: "My grandparents have lost their lives through cancer and I was just wanting to do something nice and raise money for charity. "It's been enjoyable. The last one, the Scafell Pike marathon, was really hard. When I was coming to the end I was starting to struggle, but it's been enjoyable. I've been training for a year now, so it's been good for my health and mental wellbeing. "I'm really looking forward to it (the Great North Run) because it's meant to be really good. I have done it before but a different route because it was through Covid. "I think my grandparents would be very proud of me, my mam and dad are really proud of me because of what I have done. It hasn't always been easy. "I struggled with mental health and found running which has really helped me. I struggle with drink, drugs and gambling. I had addictions and running has helped me keep away from these addictions." Chris has plans already to keep raising funds, already being booked in for an Iron Man triathlon challenge next year.
