Margao: The Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) at its meeting on Monday passed a resolution to the effect that no garbage from areas other than Quepem, Dharbandora, Sanguem, and Canacona will be allowed for treatment at the Cacora waste treatment plant. The council also decided to file an intervention application in the high court as a means to seek legal redress. The meeting was held in the presence of local MLA and PWD minister Nilesh Cabral. The decision assumes significance in light of the high court order directing the Margao Municipal Council to transport 20 tonne of wet waste to the Cacora waste plant for treatment. Cabral said the 100-tpd plant at Curchorem was designed keeping in view the waste management needs for the next 25 years. "If we start bringing waste from elsewhere at the outset, the plant will soon be insufficient to treat our own waste. The high court's decision is incorrect. We condemn the decision," he said. The chairperson of the CCMC, Pradip Naik, told reporters that the council will also present its views to chief minister Pramod Sawant and the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC). Responding to a question, Cabral said it was the government's responsibility to provide 100 tonne of waste to the contractor running the plant. "The government has to first focus on getting garbage from the four talukas. The high court should monitor the collection of garbage from panchayat areas. If the GWMC can't do it (garbage collection), give the job to me. I will do it, I have a lot of experience in that," Cabral said. Residents of Curchorem had protested outside the plant at Cacora, objecting to the treatment of Sonsoddo waste at the Cacora plant.
